When Fig Leaves Aren’t Enough
Shame has a way of making us scramble. Just like Adam and Eve, we reach for the nearest “fig leaf” to cover up—whether it’s work, humor, relationships, or even religion. But the truth is, fig leaves always itch. They don’t heal wounds, they just hide them…sort of.
God never meant for us to live covered in irritation and fear. From the very beginning, He provided a better covering. In Eden, it was garments of skin, foreshadowing the Lamb who would one day cover the shame of the whole world. At the cross, Jesus didn’t just take away our guilt—He took away our shame. He re-names us, dresses us in righteousness, and invites us to walk in the light.
Shame says, “You are what you did.”
The cross says, “You are who Jesus says you are.”
So here’s the invitation: Stop reaching for fig leaves. Let Jesus clothe you in the freedom and dignity He died to give you.
